What is plug-in solar?
Plug-in solar is a small, self-contained solar setup designed to sit on a balcony, patio, garden or shed roof. It usually contains one or two rigid photovoltaic panels (around 400–465 W each), a mounting bracket or frame, cabling, and a plug-in inverter or all-in-one power station that feeds electricity into your home via a standard UK socket.
Unlike a full roof installation, there is no fixed mounting, no scaffolding, and no MCS installer. You can set it up yourself in an afternoon and take it with you when you move — which makes plug-in solar ideal for renters and flat owners who do not own their roof.
Is plug-in solar legal in the UK?
Since 27 August 2026, plug-in solar microgenerators up to 800 W AC output have been legal to connect to a standard UK socket, provided the specific product is listed as Compliant on the ENA Type Test Register. This is the change introduced by SI 2026/848.

What can you realistically expect to generate?
A 2-panel, 800 W plug-in solar kit angled towards the sun and facing south can generate roughly 700–750 kWh per year in the UK. On a bright July day, a 460 W panel peaks at around 380 W and produces about 2.8 kWh total. That is real-world output, not the nameplate rating.
East or west-facing balconies still work well, but expect roughly 25% less annual output. North-facing balconies are usually not worth it unless the panels can be tilted significantly and there is no shading.
What to watch out for
- warningShading. Even a small shadow across a panel can cut output dramatically because of how panels are wired internally.
- warningWind. Balcony mounts need to be solid. A cheap bracket in a high wind can become a hazard.
- warningLandlord or lease terms. If you rent, check your tenancy agreement before installing anything on a balcony rail.
- warningCable length. Panels and the inverter often sit apart. Custom MC4 cables are usually needed, so budget for that.
How to choose a UK plug-in solar kit
Look for kits that are modular, use reputable panels (JA Solar is a common UK choice), and either include or clearly recommend a compliant plug-in inverter. If you want battery storage, make sure you understand the separate battery rules and the extra cost.
